Artist Statement

In Makara Thach Sernett’s work you will see a dance of texture and color that evokes romantic whimsy. Her ethereal style uses techniques of indirect painting and impasto. Her imaginative color schemes and spacious compositions are often based on memories of her past. Makara’s goal is to bring joy and comfort to the viewer through her personal story.

Makara was born in 1989 in southern Vietnam. Due to political and cultural conflict surrounding indigenous Cambodians in Vietnam, her family sought a life in America. Her earliest years were spent in a refugee camp before immigrating to America in 1999. Initially aspiring to a career in law, Makara decided instead to pursue her love for painting as a full time artist.
